[ltr]Chapter five in points[/ltr]
[ltr]The giant baby girl has just dropped Gulliver, but he was not hurt as he didn't hit the floor and landed in a soft blanket That was held around the baby. All in the room laughed including the baby.[/ltr]
[ltr]The giant farmer Picked Gulliver up and Gulliver saw his face closely. He saw that the man's hair was like branches of a small tree. Then the man's wife carefully picked Gulliver and carried him to a bed and put a handkerchief over his legs.[/ltr]
[ltr]Gulliver slept and dreamt of his family so he felt very sad. Gulliver looked around and found that he was alone in the room. The bed was nearly eight meters so Gulliver couldn't know how to get down to the floor. Gulliver thought about calling the farmer's wife , but his voice wouldn't be heard.[/ltr]
[ltr]Suddenly Gulliver saw two rats the size of two large dogs. When they saw Gulliver they jumped onto the bed and began to attack Gulliver. One of them held Gulliver's sleeves with its teeth. Gulliver tried to defend himself by using his knife. He managed to hurt one of them and they escaped.[/ltr]
[ltr]The farmer's wife entered the room , she was surprised to see Gulliver sitting on the bed with a knife. Through signs he tried to explain what had happened .She seemed to understand and took Gulliver into the garden to breathe some fresh air.[/ltr]
[ltr]That evening, the farmer's daughter , Glumdalclitch, who was nine years helped her mother to prepare a tiny bed for Gulliver. They put the bed on a low shelf inside a cupboard to be safe from any rats..[/ltr]
[ltr]The young girl loved sewing and made Gulliver clothes and dressed him like a doll. She made him seven shirts and four pairs of trousers. She also taught him her language by pointing to things and telling him their names. She was very kind and called him Grildrig which means " puppet" [/ltr]
[ltr]The farmer's neighbors had heard about Gulliver so one day, an old man who was a friend of the farmers came to see Gulliver. The farmer put Gulliver on the table in the kitchen to talk to the man.[/ltr]
[ltr]There was a conversation between Gulliver and the man. Gulliver did what the man asked him , walked up and down and named objects in their languages. The old man put on his glasses to see better. When Gulliver looked at the man he thought that his eyes looked like two giants moons and Gulliver laughed. The old man was angry when Gulliver laughed at him .[/ltr]
[ltr]The man suggested that the farmer should make Gulliver work to earn money if he were clever. The man suggest that the farmer could take Gulliver to the market where people could pay money to see Gulliver. The farmer agreed , but Glumdalclitch was very worried about Gulliver. She was worried that people would pick him up and play with him. They might break his arms or drop him. But her father told her to think of the money they could get from him. Finally she decided to go with her father to be Gulliver's guard.[/ltr]
[ltr]The next day , the farmer and Glumdalclitch put Gulliver in a small wooden box and for the half-hour ride to the market in the town nearby. There were three small holes in the box to help Gulliver breathe and look out . As the horse was fast, Gulliver felt as if he were on a ship in a storm. [/ltr]
[ltr]When they arrived at an inn next to the market, Gulliver was put on a table in the largest room inside the inn. The farmer allowed thirty people at a time to come into the room to see Gulliver. Gulliver's job was to welcome people , walk up and down and answer Glumdalclitch's questions. People in the market heard about the amazing little man inside the inn and more and more people wanted to see Gulliver. [/ltr]
[ltr]During this show Gulliver faced some troubles, A school boy threw a nut at Gulliver. It was the size of a large rock and hit his head so the boy was sent out of the room. Gulliver was shown to twelve different groups of people so when he finished , he was exhausted as a result when he came back , he had to rest for three days. [/ltr]
[ltr]Unluckily, he couldn't rest at the house as the farmer's neighbors came to see Gulliver , the farmer was happy as people paid him money. From here The farmer thought of taking Gulliver to all Cities in the land. He packed all things for a long journey and they set off for the capital on 17th August 1703. [/ltr]
[ltr]On their way they stopped at eighteen large towns , many small villages and even private houses. Sometimes , Glumdalclitch pretended that she was tired to help Gulliver rest as he was exhausted. She spend time teaching him languages and got him out to have fresh air , Gulliver saw enormous buildings and five or six rivers that were wider than The Nile.[/ltr]
[ltr]After ten weeks they arrived in the capital city which was called Lorbrulgrud the farmer found a hotel in the main street not far from the king's palace. He hired a room in the hotel with a huge table in the middle where Gulliver could perform. Gulliver could understand the people thanks to Glumdalclitch. The farmer continued to earn more and this made Gulliver exhausted. After a few week, Gulliver lost weight , felt ill and tired. The farmer saw that Gulliver looked liked a skeleton and was worried that Gulliver would die.[/ltr]
[ltr]Gulliver was Lucky because a servant from the palace came and asked the farmer had to go to show Gulliver to The Queen. When Gulliver saw the queen , he bowed down and said he was pleased to meet her. She smiled and asked Gulliver some questions and said that Gulliver seemed intelligent despite his size. She asked him to live in the palace with the king and her family. Gulliver said he would be happy if the farmer agreed . [/ltr]
[ltr]The farmer agreed as he thought Gulliver was ill and might die and sold Gulliver for a thousand pieces of gold. Now Gulliver belonged to the queen and asked her to keep Glumdalclitch as a teacher and she agreed. The farmer also agreed to leave his daughter as she would get a good job in the palace . When the farmer was leaving Gulliver did not say a word to him because he thought that he only sold him as he thought he would die. [/ltr]
[ltr]The queen picked Gulliver up and carried him to the King in another room. When the king saw Gulliver, he looked at him in surprise. He thought Gulliver was a toy , the queen asked Gulliver to tell the king about himself. After the conversation with Gulliver , the king thought that the farmer had tricked the queen and took the money and looked at Gulliver angrily. [/ltr]
[ltr]Chapter(six) in points[/ltr]
[ltr]It was Gulliver's first day in the palace where the king was angry about Gulliver so the queen asked him to ask for advice from his best scholars in the land. The scholars arrived , they were three important looking men. The men didn't understand how Gulliver could be small and still alive. One of them said that Gulliver was not strong or fast , his teeth are too small and he might eat insects. Gulliver explained to them that he was not the only one in this size and there were many people like him in his country and they eat easily as people of their land so the scholars loved. The scholars thought that Gulliver had been taught to say these things by the farmer.[/ltr]
[ltr]When[/ltr] |
[ltr]the king heard this he asked to see the farmer , when the farmer came , the king asked him , his daughter and the queen some questions about Gulliver. Finally , the king thought that his scholars were wrong and Gulliver was right about what he had said. He said that the queen could keep Gulliver. Glumdalclitch would stay with Gulliver and she had a room in the palace.[/ltr]
[ltr]The queen asked the palace carpenter to make Gulliver a comfortable home the size of a box that the farmer carried him in. It was a comfortable house for Gulliver. [/ltr]
[ltr]Gulliver had a key for his house , it was the smallest thing made in the palace. He used it to lock the door to prevent any insects or rats. Gulliver kept the key fitted to his hand, he didn't want Glumdalclitch to keep it as she might drop it as it was tiny. They made Gulliver new clothes from the best cotton , but Gulliver felt they were rough and uncomfortable.[/ltr]
[ltr]Now[/ltr] |
[ltr]the queen became very friendly to Gulliver and asked him to sit at a small table by her arm during meals. He usually ate with The queen, Glumdalclitch, the queen's two daughters who were sixteen and thirteen years old. Gulliver was amazed , because a meal for one of the daughters was big enough to feed twenty farmers in his country. [/ltr]
[ltr]Every Wednesday, the king joined them and he enjoyed talking to and asking Gulliver about ways of entertainment in his country , how they worked and where the lived. One day the king laughed told one of his advisors that he couldn't believe that people who were small could have houses , cities, clothes , jobs, rewards, prizes, arguments and fights. Gulliver realised that the king was making fun of his country so he felt angry ,but he was too small to do anything.[/ltr]
[ltr]Most[/ltr] |
[ltr]people in the palace were kind to Gulliver except one servant who didn't like him. One day this servant picked Gulliver up and dropped him into a bowl of cream and ran away. The cream was cold and thick , buy Gulliver was a good swimmer , he was lucky so he didn't drown. It was Glumdalclitch who rescued him by pulling him in time. After this accident Gulliver was ill and was put to bed. [/ltr]
[ltr]When the queen heard of that accident, she punished the servant by making him wash all the cream from Gulliver's clothes. From that day Gulliver hated eating ice cream.[/ltr]
[ltr]The punishment did not prevent the servant from trying to playing tricks on Gulliver. One day after eating some meat , the servant put Gulliver's legs into a hole of a large bone before standing the bone up on the plate. When Glumdalclitch saw Gulliver , she laughed and took him out of the bone. [/ltr]
[ltr]The[/ltr] |
[ltr]biggest problem for Gulliver was the bees. They came into the palace during the summer when the windows were open or when they eat sweets things or fruit. The queen thought Gulliver was not brave as he was afraid of these insects. One day, while Gulliver was eating some cakes in his home, Three bees flew in through the window. One of them carried a cake away and the others flew around his head. He pulled out his sword and attacked them , He cut theirs stings and they ran away. He quickly closed the window , although it was hot and there was not much air.[/ltr]
[ltr]One[/ltr] |
[ltr]day, the king asked Gulliver to sit down so he could talk to him. The king told Gulliver more about his country. The king said that there were mountains in the north , they were forty kilometers high. They can't pass them because many of them were volcanoes. No one In Brobdingnag knew what were behind these mountains. The king added that the rest of his country had sea all around it. But there was not a harbour in all the country As the sea was rough and it was dangerous for ships so they had never travelled to other countries. He also added that their rivers were full of fish , so they didn't need to go fishing in the seas. [/ltr]
[ltr]In addition to that , the king told Gulliver that there were fifty-one cities in his country, as well as many towns and villages. The capital, Lorbrulgrud was on a river and had 80, 000 houses. Gulliver was interested to hear this information and asked the king to see more of his land.[/ltr]
[ltr]One[/ltr] |
[ltr] day , Glumdalclitch took Gulliver for a ride on her horse into the parks, she carried him in a special box made by the queen's carpenter. Inside the box was a table and two chairs, fastened to the floor in order not to move. On a another day, Glumdalclitch carried his box with him inside and went into the palace gardens, she took him out of the box and put him under some apple trees and she went for a walk. At that moment the bad servant saw Gulliver alone , so he shook the branches and twelve apples fell down. One of them hit Gulliver on the back and another hit his face, but he was not badly hurt. The servant laughed out and ran away. [/ltr]
[ltr]Gulliver faced other accidents always when Glumdalclitch had left him alone. Once a bird picked him up before he frightened it with his sword. Another time, he fell in a huge hole made by animals and it was very difficult for him to get out. On another day, Glumdalclitch went for a walk and left Gulliver on the grass, suddenly it began to hail , each hail stone was the size of a tennis ball and it hurt him greatly. He had so many bruises that he could not walk for many days.[/ltr]
[ltr]The[/ltr] |
[ltr]worst accident happened when a dog came and smelled him , took him in its mouth , the dog went to his master who worked in the gardens. Luckily it dropped Gulliver in front of the man's feet and the man picked Gulliver up before the dog could do damage to him. The man went to tell Glumdalclitch , but she didn't tell the queen thinking that she would be angry. From that moment Glumdalclitch promised not to leave Gulliver alone again , but Gulliver was not happy as he needed his own space and freedom. [/ltr]
[ltr]One[/ltr] |
[ltr] day Gulliver was telling the queen about his travels on the seas, the queen thought he was a good sailor and asked him if he would like a boat to show them what he could do with it. Gulliver told her that he needed a special boat . The queen asked the carpenter to make Gulliver a boat , after few days , he was given a small sailing boat made from hard wood. First the queen suggested that he could sail the boat in the bath, but there was no much room, so she asked the servants to make a small lake in the garden. The queen and her ladies liked to see Gulliver sailing up and down the lake and they sometimes waved their hands around to make breeze which allowed him to sail more quickly. But one day a frog Jumped into the lake and made a wave that was so big that it nearly turned the boat over. The queen grabbed him quickly. Everyday after Gulliver had finished sailing, the queen picked up the boat and put it on a nail on the wall in the garden to dry in the sun. [/ltr]
[ltr]The biggest danger for Gulliver at that Time was from a monkey that belonged to one of the servants. When the monkey saw Gulliver's house , it looked pleased and ran up to take a closer look. It saw Gulliver through the windows and tried to reach Gulliver with its long arms. Gulliver tried to hide, but the monkey got hold of his jacket and pulled him towards it. It held Gulliver in its arms as a mother did with a baby. Gulliver tried to escape, but the monkey squeezed him so hard so Gulliver decided not to move. When Glumdalclitch came , they monkey escaped out of the window and climbed up the roof of the palace still holding Gulliver with him with one hand. Glumdalclitch shouted to save Gulliver so servants were running outside with long wooden ladders, but the monkey was sitting at the highest point of the roof, holding Gulliver like a baby and trying to feed him on some nuts, it patted Gulliver and the servants laughed when they saw that.[/ltr]
[ltr]Some of the servants climbed up the ladders, when the monkey heard them , it put Gulliver down and ran quickly. Now Gulliver was alone at the top of the roof and it was as high as a mountain for him . Gulliver felt the wind blowing strongly , so he prayed that the servants could get him down before the wind blew him off the roof.[/ltr]
[ltr]Chapter (7) in points[/ltr]
[ltr] Gulliver was up on the top of the palace roof , he was in danger of being blown off by the wind. The queen's servants tried to save Gulliver. A brave servant reached up from his ladder , put Gulliver in his pocket and carried him back to the ground. After that accident Gulliver was so ill and stayed in bed for two weeks. The king and the queen used to visit Gulliver and he knew that the monkey had been sent away from the palace so Gulliver didn't need to worry about it again.[/ltr]
[ltr] After being well , Gulliver went to the king in his office . The king asked him what he would do if the monkey took him away to his country. Gulliver told him that there were no monkeys in his country , but if there were Gulliver wouldn't be so frightened of them as they would be so small and wouldn't be a problem for him. The king laughed and asked Gulliver to tell him more about his country. So , Gulliver told him about England , its government, weather, arts , education, and about kings and queens. the legal system and the events in the country's history. The king was interested in Gulliver's words and took notes of what Gulliver said. The king used his notes to ask Gulliver questions. Gulliver said that the king seemed to think that Gulliver's country had a weak legal system and the government was strange .[/ltr]
[ltr]The king asked Gulliver where they got there money and why they had so many wars. Gulliver told the king that they had weapons that could destroy buildings and kill people easily. Gulliver asked the king if he would like to show him how to make weapons , the king looked horrified and asked him not to talk about this again. Gulliver felt that his country seemed small , unimportant and badly run in the eyes of the king. [/ltr]
[ltr] The king told Gulliver that he felt sorry for people in England and told Gulliver he was lucky to escape to a better place where people want to grow food rather than make war. During many talks with the king, Gulliver realized that Brobdingnag was different from England. They didn't need weapons but they didn't have many books. The king's library which was the largest in the land, had only a thousand books in it. The king told Gulliver that he could borrow anything to read and asked the carpenter to make Gulliver a ladder to reach the top shelves. [/ltr]
[ltr]When Gulliver found an interesting book, he pushed it open against a wall, then used the ladder to climb to the top of the page to read the first line , then slowly walk down the ladder until he had read all the page. He used his both hands to turn the page . Gulliver could read the books easily and read most of the books in the library because the language of Brobdingnag did not have many words. From reading books , he knew about the country's ideas and beliefs and although there were no wars with other countries , they had some rebellions between different areas inside the country.[/ltr]
[ltr]From books , he also knew about music in Brobdingnag , when he asked the king about it, the king offered to make him hear a concert. One day Gulliver was taken in his box to a large room and placed on a table to hear the best musicians. When the concert started the sound was too loud and the music sounded like thunder. Gulliver told the king about that problem so the king decided to move the box to the next room but the noise was too loud so Gulliver was taken to a room in the far corner of the palace and the doors and windows closed. Gulliver began to hear the music and it was quite nice .[/ltr]
[ltr]Gulliver now had been in Brobdingnag for two years , he began to think more and more about his country England. He wanted to see his family , but how he could get home . When the king knew about Gulliver's thoughts he said he would like to help him. The king asked his soldiers to find a ship like the ship that brought Gulliver to Brobdingnag. The king told Gulliver that he would like to find him some friends of his size and they could live in the palace with Gulliver. Gulliver said it was a kind offer from the king but he didn't like the idea that more people being kept to please the king and the queen. Gulliver said he wanted to speak to people like him without giants stepping on them. Or a bird taking him away. So Gulliver needed to leave Brobdingnag.[/ltr]
[ltr]One day , Glumdalclitch and Gulliver were travelling with The king and the queen , as usual Gulliver was carried in the wooden box until they arrived at one of the king's palaces in the south of Brobdingnag about thirty kilometers from the coast. Glumdalclitch was tired but Gulliver asked her to let him go to the beach to get some fresh air and she agree and asked a young servant boy to take Gulliver there in the wooden box.[/ltr]
[ltr]When Gulliver reached the beach, he was very pleased to see the sea again. He looked out of the windows of the box. After some minutes the sea waves made Gulliver feel tired so he slept . The boy closed the windows to keep out the cold and the wind. They boy left the box and went to look for birds' eggs on the beach.[/ltr]
[ltr]Gulliver did not know how long he had slept , but he was waken by a noise of something lifting him and carried him at great speed into the air. Gulliver tried to speak to know who carried him but it was no good. All he could hear was a noise that sounded like the flapping of wings and he could finally understand that a huge sea bird had picked up the box and carried it off in its feet. Gulliver thought that the bird thought his box as a seashell and would break it hard onto a hard rock to get the soft food inside so Gulliver was extremely worried.[/ltr]
[ltr]After a few minutes Gulliver heard the flapping of the wings get faster and the box moved up and down very quickly. Then Gulliver felt himself falling very quickly towards the ground There was a terrible jolt and Gulliver couldn't breathe for a few seconds. the box was not broken but it continued to move slowly up and down and Gulliver thought it landed on the sea. Silently (Gulliver thanked the carpenter )for making the box so well using strong wood and metal for the edges , no water came in the box and the box floated well. The bird left the box and flew away . Gulliver knew that he was far away from Glumdalclitch, he was also worried about the rocks not to hit the box so he would drown.[/ltr]
[ltr]Chapter(8) in points[/ltr]
[ltr]The sea bird had dropped Gulliver’s box in the sea . The box was well made , but Gulliver saw some water coming through the edges of the front door. He tried to stop the water by putting blankets across the edges. [/ltr]
[ltr] Gulliver tried to lift the roof of the house, because he thought it would be safer if he sit on the top of the box where he could have fresh air or he might be seen by anyone. Gulliver couldn’t lift the roof up and was on the sea for four hours and expected to die or drown.[/ltr]
[ltr]Gulliver’s box had a door on one side, two windows on two other sides. On the fourth side there were two metal loops to help anyone carry the box. Suddenly Gulliver heard a noise and the box moved faster through the sea and This gave Gulliver hope . Through the hole in the box Gulliver put his mouth close to it and shouted for help in different languages, then he took his handkerchief and tied it to a pole and waved in the hope of being seen. After an hour , Gulliver felt that the box was being lifted out of the sea. During that Gulliver spoke without hope , but he was surprised when he heard someone answering him. There was a discussion between Gulliver and the voice. The voice told Gulliver that he would ask the carpenter of the ship to make a hole in the roof to get Gulliver out. Gulliver told the man to just ask one of his sailors to pick up the box to the ship and lift up the roof. The people laughed at this and Gulliver knew later that they were of his size.[/ltr]
[ltr]The carpenter made a hole and Gulliver got out of the box. When the captain of the ship (Thomas Wilcocks) saw Gulliver , he realized that Gulliver was weak and ill . He took Gulliver to a bed and gave him a hot drink . He told Gulliver that he was safe and could rest.[/ltr]
[ltr]Before resting, Gulliver asked the captain that he had valuable things he didn’t want to lose as furniture, blankets and some souvenirs. Although the captain looked at Gulliver with a strange look, he agreed to Gulliver’s request. The sailors got all Gulliver’s things , cut the ropes and let the box fall back into the sea and it quickly sank. Then there was an important discussion between Gulliver and the captain about the way of saving him from water. The captain thought the box was a ship so he decided to go to it as they had lack of food and went to buy sea biscuits. When he knew that it was not a boat , he sent some of his sailors on a boat , they went and returned to the captain saying that they were afraid because they had seen a big house floating on the sea. The captain laughed and told them he would go and see for himself. The captain told Gulliver that he was surprised when he saw the house. He decided to take the box back to the ship. [/ltr]
[ltr]After talking with Gulliver, the captain thought that Gulliver was a criminal who was put inside the box to be punished and the captain decide to leave Gulliver at the nearest port. Gulliver tried to explain what happened to him to the captain . Finally the captain asked Gulliver to show him some of the things with him.[/ltr]
[ltr]Gulliver took something from the cupboard , he showed him a comb, a sting , needles , pins and a ring. Gulliver offered the ring as a present to the captain , but the captain was interested in a tooth with Gulliver, It was the tooth of one of the queen’s servants. [/ltr]
[ltr]Gulliver was speaking with the captain in a loud voice so the captain asked Gulliver if the people of Brobdingnag were a little deaf. Gulliver told him that they were not deaf but he was so small. After talking with Gulliver , the captain advised Gulliver to tell his story to the newspapers so that the whole world could know about his adventures.[/ltr]
[ltr]Finally , On 3rd June 1706, they arrived back at the south coast of England. After nine months from leaving Brobdingnag. Before leaving the ship, Gulliver told the captain that he wanted him to keep his things until he could pay him for all that he had done for him , but the captain refused. He even gave Gulliver some money to hire a horse back home . While Gulliver was riding home, he told people to look out because he did not want to hurt anyone . [/ltr]
[ltr]Eventually , he arrived back at his house, he was happy to see his family again. His wife begged him to promise her not to leave again and he could find a job here in England. [/ltr]
